Hi, I’m Randy and I play drums. Welcome to my site. For about 30 years I was incredibly fortunate to play in a band, Toad the Wet Sprocket, with a few great friends, during which time I also taught drums when I wasn’t on tour. Now that I’m no longer traveling I’ve been teaching full time, and I’m really liking it. Nothing compares to playing live with a really good band. But there’s a special kind of joy I’m finding by helping to ignite and fuel someone else’s passion for drumming... to drawing out a musician’s individuality and creativity. I’ve received a whole lot of help and encouragement throughout my career, and I’m indebted to all those who helped shape me, as a person and a musician. As a teacher I try to do for my students what so many did for me. As a result my approach is personalized for each individual musician. My goal is to give each person the necessary tools to create exactly what they want; to be able to joyfully express themselves through the drums the way I was encouraged to do.
Working with Randy Guss has been all around positive. My son tells me he is friendly and fun to talk to. I have seen that he is also enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge and experiences to help my son develop and succeed as a drummer.
Randy works on technique, how to improve the sound quality of my son’s kit, and encourages creativity. He customizes their lessons to include my son’s current interests, making them all the more fun and relevant.
Having lessons virtually has some benefits. In addition to being able to teach from 3,000 miles away, Randy is able to give specific, personalized recommendations based on my son’s home setup.
Since they began working together, I have seen my son’s skill and confidence grow. I am grateful that he has had this opportunity to learn from such an accomplished drummer.

It has always been a dream of mine to be able to play the drums and I've always had a passion for metal music. The support and encouragement Randy pours into his students is highly cherishable and I am extremely grateful to be able to learn from him and jam with him.

My son is excited about learning and looks forward to his lessons. He loves his instrument and it’s because of Randy. I remember listening from outside the room and hearing actual music during his very first lesson. As a parent I’m so grateful and thankful for an amazing teacher who truly sparks my son’s passion and love of music.
